When Justice Meets

An 86-year prison sentence for a teenager can leave a community facing difficult questions. For victims and their families, a long sentence may represent accountability for harm that cannot be undone. Serious crimes can permanently change lives, and those affected understandably want the justice system to recognize the seriousness of what happened and help protect the community.

At the same time, sentencing a young person raises questions about age, maturity, and the possibility of change. Teenagers can make extremely serious decisions and must take responsibility when their actions cause significant harm. But adolescence is also a time of major development.
