When my father died, I thought grief would be the hardest part. I was wrong. Months later, I discovered my stepmother living alone in a tiny apartment, struggling with poverty and barely having enough food. My father had left her nothing, and my siblings, who had never accepted her, wanted nothing to do with her.

Seeing her condition broke my heart. That evening, I told my husband I was bringing her home. My family warned me I would regret it, insisting she had married my father for financial security. But I couldn’t leave her to suffer alone.

When she arrived, she apologized constantly and stayed mostly in the guest room, afraid of being a burden. My children, however, welcomed her immediately. They called her Grandma, shared their drawings, and brought her little treats. One afternoon, my youngest gave her a cookie and whispered, “You look hungry.” Later, I found her crying quietly in the kitchen.
