I Asked My Coworker to Be My Date to My Ex-Husband’s Wedding—What Happened Next Changed Everything

“Come to my wedding with Claire and bring the girls. Your invitation includes a plus-one, but we both know you don’t have anyone.”

We had been married for nearly thirteen years and had two daughters when our marriage ended. Max had become increasingly critical of my appearance, and his words slowly affected the way I saw myself. After our separation, he quickly announced that he was going to marry someone else.

I could have skipped the wedding, but our daughters were attending, and my oldest kept asking whether I would be there. So I decided to go. When I noticed the invitation allowed me to bring a guest, I had an idea. I wanted to walk into that room feeling confident instead of wondering what Max thought about me.

That was how I ended up standing beside my coworker Edward on Monday morning.

“I need a favor.”

He looked up. “That sounds serious.”

“Come to my ex-husband’s wedding with me.”

“As emotional support?”

“As my boyfriend.”

He stared at me.

“Pretend boyfriend,” I quickly added.

Edward laughed. “That sounds much safer.”

During the divorce, Edward had become one of my closest friends. He listened when I needed someone to talk to and helped me through some difficult days. After a moment, he agreed to come with me.

The wedding was beautiful. There were flowers everywhere, elegant decorations, and dozens of guests. Our daughters were excited to be there. Then Max saw us.

His eyes moved from me to Edward and back again.

“So this is your plus-one?” he asked.

“Max, this is Edward.”

Edward offered his hand. “Congratulations.”

Max looked at him and gave a short laugh. “Your boyfriend?”

“Yes,” I replied.

His expression changed. “I don’t believe it.”

For a moment, I felt the old insecurity returning. Then Edward calmly stepped beside me.

“Max,” he said, “you seem more interested in who Veronica brought than in your own wedding.”

The comment caught him off guard.

Edward then handed me a small gift bag. “I brought something for you.”

Inside was a simple card. On it were the words: Never let someone else’s opinion become your definition of yourself.

I looked at him, surprised.

“I wanted you to have that tonight,” he said.

Max glanced toward us. “You two planned all this?”

“No,” Edward answered. “But I did want Veronica to understand something.”

He turned toward me.

“You asked me to come because you wanted someone beside you who would make you feel like you were enough. But you were already enough before I arrived.”

I didn’t know what to say.

Edward continued quietly. “You don’t need a date to prove anything to Max. You don’t need his approval. And you don’t need mine either.”

For the first time that evening, I felt the tension leave my shoulders.

Then my oldest daughter appeared beside me. CONTINUE READING….
