Doctors Urge People To Stop Taking VITAMIN D if They Have These Symp…See more

Vitamin D is essential for strong bones, proper calcium absorption, muscle function, and normal immune activity. However, while vitamin D deficiency can cause health problems, taking excessive amounts of vitamin D supplements can also be harmful. Toxicity is uncommon and usually happens when very high doses are taken for a long period of time rather than from normal sunlight exposure or food.

Too much vitamin D can cause calcium levels in the blood to rise, a condition known as hypercalcemia. Possible symptoms include persistent thirst, frequent urination, nausea, vomiting, poor appetite, constipation, dehydration, weakness, and confusion. In more serious cases, high calcium levels may contribute to kidney stones, kidney damage, abnormal heart rhythms, and other complications. These symptoms can also have many other causes, so they do not automatically mean vitamin D toxicity.

For most adults, the recommended daily intake is around **600 IU (15 mcg)**, increasing to **800 IU (20 mcg)** for adults over 70. The usual tolerable upper intake level for adults is **4,000 IU (100 mcg) per day**. Higher doses may sometimes be prescribed to treat vitamin D deficiency, but they should generally be taken under medical supervision. People should also remember that vitamin D may be present in multivitamins, calcium supplements, fortified foods, and other products.

If someone is taking high-dose vitamin D and develops concerning symptoms, they should speak with a healthcare professional rather than assuming vitamin D is the cause or changing prescribed treatment on their own. A doctor can check vitamin D and calcium levels when necessary. Vitamin D is important for good health, but taking more does not always provide greater benefits, making proper dosing and medical guidance especially important.
