6 Things To Avoid Flushing Down The Toilet (And How to Keep Your Plumbing Happy)

A clogged toilet can quickly turn from a minor inconvenience into an expensive plumbing emergency. While many blockages can be cleared with a plunger, some result in overflowing water, damaged pipes, and costly repair bills. The good news is that most toilet problems are preventable. Understanding what should never be flushed is one of the simplest ways to protect your plumbing system and avoid unnecessary headaches.

One of the biggest causes of clogs is hair. Unlike toilet paper, hair does not dissolve in water. Instead, it tangles together and catches on rough spots inside pipes, creating a net that traps other debris. Baby wipes, makeup wipes, and even products labeled “flushable” are another major problem. These wipes are designed to stay strong when wet, meaning they can remain intact for weeks or months after being flushed, contributing to serious blockages in household plumbing and municipal sewer systems.

Paper towels, facial tissues, feminine hygiene products, cotton swabs, and dental floss can also create plumbing disasters. Paper towels and tissues are manufactured to maintain their strength when wet, unlike toilet paper, which is specifically designed to break apart rapidly. Feminine products absorb water and expand, making them especially likely to become lodged in pipes. Cotton swabs and dental floss may seem harmless, but they often catch on pipe surfaces and combine with other debris to form stubborn clogs that are difficult to remove.

If something inappropriate is accidentally flushed, acting quickly can prevent an overflow. Turn off the water supply, avoid flushing again, and use a proper toilet plunger. If the clog remains, dish soap and hot—not boiling—water may help loosen it. Persistent blockages should be handled by a professional plumber.

Ultimately, the safest rule is simple: only human waste and toilet paper belong in the toilet. Developing small habits, such as keeping a bathroom trash can nearby, can save significant money, prevent plumbing emergencies, and help maintain a clean, reliable home environment.
