Our entire family gathered for what was supposed to be a special birthday dinner celebrating my grandfather, the man who had spent decades building a respected family business and apprenticeship program. As everyone settled around the table, my brother confidently spoke about the future of the family name and the direction he believed it should take. At one point, he looked directly at me and questioned whether I had contributed enough to deserve carrying on our family’s legacy.
