Donald Trump promises to give $2,000 to almost everyone in America – here’s who will receive the payout

Donald Trump grabbed headlines with a series of Truth Social posts promising a “dividend of at least $2,000 per person (not including high-income people!)” funded by tariff revenues. He gave no details on who would qualify or when payments might arrive but framed it as part of his broader economic vision.

The former president has previously floated similar ideas, linking rebate checks to tariff income. Now, with tariff receipts rising and legal scrutiny mounting, he’s doubling down on the proposal.

Trump described tariffs as an engine of prosperity, claiming they boost revenue, create jobs, and strengthen domestic investment. “People that are against Tariffs are FOOLS!” he wrote, boasting that America is “the richest, most respected country in the world” with “record stock market prices.”

He also defended his authority to impose tariffs, arguing that Congress allows the president to halt all trade but somehow questions tariffs for national security reasons. “Other countries can Tariff us, but we can’t Tariff them?” he asked rhetorically.

Analysts, however, point out serious hurdles. The proposed payouts could cost between $300 and $513 billion, far exceeding the $195 billion collected in customs duties in the first three quarters of 2025. Economist Erica York noted that even with optimistic estimates, tariff revenues fall far short of what’s needed for $2,000 per person.

Adding to the challenge, the Supreme Court is reviewing cases that could strike down Trump’s use of emergency powers to justify sweeping tariffs. If the court rules against him, the revenue base for the payout could disappear entirely.

Critics say the plan raises more questions than answers — especially about eligibility, funding, and legality.

For now, Trump’s $2,000 “tariff dividend” remains a bold promise — one that energizes supporters but faces steep political, financial, and legal barriers before becoming reality.
